Genealogy has become increasingly popular as people seek to connect with their heritage and learn more about their ancestry. This quest for knowledge has led to the rise of sophisticated tools like The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding (TNG). This software stands out among family tree solutions due to its ability to be self-hosted on a web server, giving users greater control and flexibility in managing their family history.

What is TNG?

The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding, commonly referred to as TNG, is a powerful family tree software designed for enthusiasts and researchers who want to store and display their genealogy data online. Unlike traditional desktop-based genealogy software, TNG is hosted on your own web server, which means you have full ownership of your data. This is a significant advantage for those who value privacy and want the freedom to customize and present their family tree data as they see fit. TNG enables users to build detailed family trees with information such as names, dates, relationships, and photos, while also allowing the addition of historical documents and personal stories. The software is designed to be interactive, making it easy for users to navigate through family trees and see connections between individuals. Additionally, TNG allows collaboration, meaning other family members can contribute to the tree with their own information, enhancing the accuracy and richness of the data.

Integrating TNG with WordPress

For those running WordPress-based websites, the TNG WordPress Integration plugin offers a seamless way to combine the power of TNG with the versatility of WordPress. WordPress, being one of the most popular and user-friendly content management systems (CMS), allows users to create dynamic websites with minimal technical expertise. By integrating TNG with WordPress, you can combine TNG’s robust genealogy features with the flexibility and customization options of WordPress, creating a comprehensive website that showcases your family history. The integration works by embedding TNG’s features directly into a WordPress website, so visitors can explore the family tree without ever leaving your WordPress site. This approach has several benefits:
  • Unified Website: Visitors to your family genealogy site will have a consistent experience without needing to navigate between different platforms or websites. This can improve user engagement and retention.
  • Enhanced Functionality: You can take advantage of WordPress’s vast plugin ecosystem to enhance your genealogy site. For example, you could use plugins to add security features, improve site speed, or enhance the visual appeal of your family tree pages.
  • SEO Benefits: Integrating TNG with WordPress also opens up the possibility of improving your site’s visibility in search engines. WordPress is known for being SEO-friendly, and by combining it with TNG, you can ensure that your genealogy data is indexed correctly and ranks well in search results.

Challenges with TNG and WordPress Integration

While the integration of TNG and WordPress offers numerous benefits, there are some potential challenges to be aware of. One of the key issues mentioned by users on forums is the need for updates to the integration plugin. As both WordPress and TNG continue to evolve with new features and security improvements, it’s crucial that the TNG WordPress Integration plugin remains compatible with the latest versions of both platforms. According to discussions on TNG’s user forums, there may be some difficulties in maintaining compatibility between TNG and the latest versions of WordPress. Some users have reported bugs or compatibility issues that have not yet been fully resolved. This isn’t unusual for third-party plugins, especially ones that bridge two separate systems like TNG and WordPress. However, it’s something to keep in mind if you plan to rely on this integration for your family tree website.

Keeping TNG and WordPress Updated

If you’re planning to use TNG with WordPress, it’s essential to follow a few best practices to avoid potential issues:
  1. Regularly Check for Plugin Updates: The developers of TNG and the WordPress Integration plugin may release updates to address compatibility issues or introduce new features. Keeping your software up to date will minimize the risk of bugs and security vulnerabilities.
  2. Test Updates on a Staging Site: Before applying major updates to TNG, WordPress, or the integration plugin, test them on a staging site. This will allow you to identify and fix any compatibility issues before they affect your live website.
  3. Stay Active on Community Forums: Engaging with the TNG community can be a great way to stay informed about potential issues and solutions. Forums and user groups are valuable resources for getting support and learning from other users’ experiences.

The Future of TNG Integration

TNG remains a highly regarded tool for genealogists who want to create a comprehensive, interactive family tree. The integration with WordPress expands its appeal by making it easier to present and manage genealogy data in a user-friendly way. Although there are challenges with keeping the integration plugin up to date, the active user community and developers are continuously working to improve compatibility and add new features. For those passionate about genealogy, TNG offers an impressive range of features and the opportunity to host and manage your own family history website. With careful planning and attention to updates, integrating TNG with WordPress can result in a highly functional and visually appealing website that showcases your family’s legacy. In conclusion, the Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding (TNG) provides a powerful solution for creating and managing family trees. By leveraging the TNG WordPress Integration plugin, you can combine the best features of both platforms to build a website that not only displays your family history but also enhances the user experience.

    Hi Tevya,
I am a TNG user and I think the software is great. I also just created a wordPress blog http://www.blog.gittensfamily.ca and I moved my Blogger stuff to my new word press set up. I see much chatter regarding the integration of TNG and WordPress but I am missing the point as to what the benefits might be of such an integration. Could you explain in 25 words or less what the benefits might entail?

      Could you explain in….

I like your style Cliff. How about 7 words? “Unified login and easy cross-content linking.” As far as I can tell, the WordPress plugin is not currently working. However, the ideal integration would allow there to be one login that gave the user access to both the site/blog and the family tree. If it used the same database, it could also potentially make it very easy to link to content from one area in the other (see WP 3.1’s new insert link functionality). That way you could link from an individual’s (or family’s) record to a blog post on that person, and vice-versa, without copying and pasting URL’s, etc.
